The Falcon Rock (Sólyomkő) Nature Reserve is a strictly protected, 1-hectare volcanic plateau situated on the eastern slope of the Piliske Mare volcanic cone, part of the Southern Harghita range, at around 824–858 metres above sea level.
This visually striking formation consists of tower-like andesite rock columns rising 50–60 metres above the ground — volcanic rock shaped into its present form by millions of years of erosion.
From the summit there is an exceptional panorama over Băile Tușnad, the Olt valley and the Ciomatu (Csomád) Mountains — one of the most beautiful viewpoints in the entire Ciuc Basin.

A unique world on the cliffs
The most remarkable feature of the reserve is Teleki's hawkweed (Hieracium telekianum) — a local endemic that grows nowhere else on Earth but on the rocks of Falcon Rock.
Birdlife
Notable species: the Ural owl (Strix uralensis), the Eurasian eagle-owl (Bubo bubo), the Eurasian nuthatch (Sitta europaea), the black woodpecker and the great spotted woodpecker — a habitat for rare forest birds.
Plant life
The mixed broadleaf and coniferous forests harbour botanical rarities: St John's wort, Telekia speciosa, and Teleki's hawkweed — a yellow-flowered endemic that grows on the planet only at this single site.
Geology
The andesite columns rise from the eastern slope of the Piliske Mare volcanic cone — spectacular remnants of the volcanic activity of the Southern Harghita.
The climb in detail
Falcon Rock can be reached from the town centre via a well-marked, moderately difficult trail — suitable for all ages.
Along the route, an 11-station interpretive nature trail introduces visitors to the flora, fauna and geology of the area — ideal for a nature-themed outing.

Did you know?
Teleki's hawkweed (Hieracium telekianum), a yellow-flowered plant, grows on Earth only here, on the rocks of Falcon Rock — nowhere else.
In the Middle Ages, Sólyomkő Castle served as a military lookout — its ruins can still be seen today on the rocks of Lower Sólyomkő.
The reserve and its surroundings are home to more than 35 brown bears — for this reason, visits after dark are discouraged.
From the summit you can see Băile Tușnad, the Olt valley and the Ciomatu (Csomád) Mountains at the same time — one of the most spectacular viewpoints in the region.
