Ó-Sáros Bath
A modern mineral-water spa rebuilt to the pattern of traditional 19th-century Borsec bath architecture —
where the past meets wellness.
The living heritage of Borsec bath culture
The Ó-Sáros Bath in Borsec is a modern mineral-water spa rebuilt in October 2012 after the pattern of traditional 19th-century bath architecture, based on period postcards. The facility is a faithful replica of the former bath that blends tradition with today's wellness needs under a modern glass roof.
The reopening marked a turning point in the life of Borsec — it paved the way for the spa town to be designated a balneo-climatic tourist resort of national importance. At the opening ceremony, mayor József Mik said:
"Borsec finally has a real bath, so we can submit our application to have the town declared a balneo-climatic tourist resort of national importance."
The bath's water comes from the nearby Boldizsár (Madonna) Spring — a natural mineral water at 10–12 °C, which was merged in 1879 from two separate springs and analysed chemically by Dr Károly Than in 1889.

Wooden building with glass roof — where past and present meet
🏛️ The Ó-Sáros Bath was rebuilt on the basis of period postcards and photographs, preserving the stylistic character of the 20th century. With this, the municipality also wished to signal that the restoration of Borsec's villas should not depart from the historical look either.
🌟 Of remarkable beauty: the building is made of wood with a glass roof and uses the water of the Boldizsár Spring directly. Modern wellness comfort and 19th-century elegance live in harmony within the building.
📅 The bath was ceremonially opened on 27 October 2012. The opening day was made memorable by a concert of the DNS band, the presence of Faló café and a film screening at the cultural centre.

The water of the Boldizsár (Madonna) Spring
💎 The Ó-Sáros Bath is supplied by the Boldizsár Spring (also known as the Madonna Spring) — one of the oldest and most abundant springs in Borsec.
📜 Until the mid-20th century there were two springs side by side, one metre apart. They were originally captured separately, but in 1879 they were combined into a single capture.
🔬 Dr Károly Than carried out the chemical analysis in 1889 — the spring's daily yield of 6,600 litres still functions today. Its temperature of 10–12 °C makes it, alongside the Pásztor Spring, the highest among Borsec's springs.
🛁 For the bath the water is heated — producing the 28–31 °C warm pool — while the 11 °C cold pool keeps its original temperature, allowing the traditional warm-cold contrast cure.
