Odorheiu Secuiesc
The "mother city of the Székelys" — the most Hungarian town of Harghita County, on the banks of the Târnava Mare. A history documented since 1333, 650 years of schooling tradition and one of the richest cultural legacies of Transylvania: a town of statues, of guilds, of schools — one in four inhabitants is a student.
Odorheiu Secuiesc is the second most populous town of Harghita County, the former centre of Udvarhelyszék (Odorhei Seat) and one of the oldest settlements in Transylvania — it grew up on both banks of the Târnava Mare from the gradual merging of four smaller hamlets and three villages. The town is already mentioned in 1333 in the papal tithe registers, and has held municipality status since 1968. The name "mother city of the Székelys" reflects centuries of preserving Hungarian culture and Székely identity — to this day the town remains the most Hungarian community in Romania (87.3%).
The name "town of schools" is no coincidence either: its gymnasium has been operating since 1593 (founded by the Jesuit Gergely Vásárhelyi), and one in four inhabitants is a student. The main square is at the same time a town of statues — Transylvania's largest collection of statues is concentrated in the town centre. The ruins of Székelytámadt Castle, the Haáz Rezső Museum, the Franciscan Church and monastery, together with the natural wonders nearby — Harghita-Mădăraș, Băile Seiche with Balázs Orbán's grave and the Zetea Reservoir — together make Odorhei the cultural heart of Székely Land.

Historic town centre
The centre of Odorheiu Secuiesc is one of the best-preserved main squares in Transylvania — the monuments cluster around the rectangular Patkó Square. The square's statue collection is the largest open-air pantheon in Transylvania, the Haáz Rezső Museum is the focal point of local history and ethnography, and the Franciscan Church and monastery form the Baroque sacred heart of the town.
Nature and excursion spots
The town lies at the foot of the Harghita Mountains — Harghita-Mădăraș (1,801 m) is the highest peak of the entire range, an ideal hiking destination. The turquoise water of Zetea Reservoir is a wonderful excursion spot in the area, where fishing and rowing await visitors. Budvár Hill, the ancient fortress site above the town, offers a breathtaking panorama.
Wellness and health tourism
The surroundings of Odorheiu Secuiesc are a long-established spa destination — Băile Seiche, with its historic mineral spring and Balázs Orbán's grave, is one of the best-known pilgrimage sites in Székely Land. The Septimia resort is one of Transylvania's most modern spa complexes, while Altus Hotel & Spa in Praid offers a modern 3-star wellness experience with salt-water pools.
