Toplița
The northern gateway of Harghita County, embraced by the Călimani, Gurghiu and Giurgeu mountains — a thermal-water waterfall, four centuries of spa tradition and the only Art Nouveau castle in Transylvania.
Toplița is the northern regional centre of Harghita County, lying on the upper Mureș, at the entrance of the Toplița–Deda Gorge — where the Călimani, Gurghiu and Giurgeu mountains meet. The town was founded by Székelys in 1567 and was once a hub of the Gheorgheni timber trade and Mureș river log driving.
The town's greatest treasure is its mesothermal mineral water: the springs of the Bánffy and Urmánczy baths were already visited in 1638 by Prince George Rákóczi I. The town is home to the only Art Nouveau castle in Transylvania (Urmánczy), one of Europe's finest travertine thermal waterfalls, and as the gateway to Călimani National Park it offers both winter sports and wild, romantic nature.

Natural wonders
Toplița lies at the meeting point of three mountain ranges — the Călimani, Gurghiu and Giurgeu mountains. Its most striking sight is a roughly 10-metre-high travertine thermal waterfall, over which 26–27 °C mineral water cascades. The surroundings include Călimani National Park, the upper Mureș and the picturesque covered wooden bridge of the former Urmánczy estate.
Thermal baths and wellness
The mesothermal mineral waters of Toplița were already visited in 1638 by Prince George Rákóczi I. The town's two historic baths — the 27 °C Bánffy Bath and the 26 °C Urmánczy Bath, the latter holding the region's largest, Olympic-sized pool (50×20 m) — are open year-round, complemented by the modern Bánffy Wellness Centre with both indoor and outdoor facilities.
Active tourism
Toplița offers outdoor activities all year round: in winter, beginners and advanced skiers find their way onto the Bradul and Măgheruș slopes, alongside sledding and outdoor skating. In summer, the trails of the Călimani Mountains, four cycling routes (towards Gălăuțaș, the Călimani Mountains, Călimănel and Tarnița Peak) and trout-filled mountain streams draw nature lovers.
Culture and heritage
The town is home to the only Art Nouveau castle in Transylvania, the Urmánczy Castle, built between 1903 and 1907. The religious heritage is rich and varied: the 17th-century Saint Elijah Orthodox Monastery, the Roman Catholic church consecrated in 1867 and the Reformed church of 1895 are all listed monuments. The Toplița Folk Art Museum brings local traditions to life.
History
Toplița was founded in 1567 by Petrichevich Horváth Kozma and was for centuries a hub of the Gheorgheni timber trade and Mureș log driving. Its springs were visited in 1638 by Prince George Rákóczi I, while in the 19th and 20th centuries the Urmánczy family became the driving force behind the town's architectural and economic boom. It was granted town status in 1952 and elevated to municipality in 2002.
