The Miercurea Ciuc Early Music Festival is one of the most venerable musical events in Székely Land and in the whole of Transylvania's cultural life, with a tradition stretching back several decades. The permanent and principal venue is the inner courtyard of Mikó Castle in Miercurea Ciuc, whose walls provide an authentic, history-laden setting for the medieval, Renaissance and Baroque melodies that come alive within them.
The festival is a highly regarded professional reference point, not only on the domestic scene but also internationally in the world of early music. Its primary aim is to research, perform on period instruments and pass on to future generations the musical heritage of the Carpathian Basin and of Europe.
The pillars and atmosphere of the festival
Evening concerts in the Mikó Castle courtyard
The backbone of the festival is the great evening concerts held in the courtyard of Mikó Castle. Within these history-soaked walls, the open-air stands traditionally fill up towards dusk, when — alongside domestic artists — distinguished guest ensembles and vocal soloists from Hungary, France, Italy and Germany take the stage.
Among the works performed, a special role is reserved for the Baroque Festival Orchestra, an ensemble of unique configuration that regularly presents the most magnificent Baroque masterpieces under the direction of world-renowned artists, such as violinist Mira Glodeanu or baritone Thomas Dolié.
Season-opening press conference and programme launch
The festival begins each early summer with an official press conference in the ceremonial hall of Miercurea Ciuc City Hall. Here the organisers, the artistic leadership and the representatives of partner institutions unveil the unfolding season's programme, the invited ensembles and the teachers of the Summer Academy.
This event is addressed not only to the press and city leaders, but also offers an opportunity for the festival's professional partners and sponsors to meet, and gives the audience a first taste of the melodies that will resound in July.
Sacred spaces and chamber concerts
A portion of the festival's concerts also rings out, beyond Mikó Castle, in the historic churches of Miercurea Ciuc and its surroundings. The unrivalled acoustics of these sacred stone-and-glass spaces offer the perfect setting for performances of Baroque vocal and string works.
These church chamber concerts offer a more intimate atmosphere: the audience can follow the playing of violinists, harpsichordists and singers from close up, while the light streams through the painted glass — an authentic Baroque experience for a 21st-century audience.
This year's edition and the Summer Academy
The official poster of the 2026 Miercurea Ciuc Early Music Festival announces a week-long programme between 6 and 12 July. Running in parallel with the festival is the Early Music Summer Academy — the most important professional pillar of the event.
During the masterclasses, students receive intensive theoretical and practical training under the guidance of leading masters. The aim is to acquire the subtleties of Baroque and Renaissance musical articulation, historical vocal technique and instrumental ornamentation, giving the younger generation of musicians the chance for professional growth.

1980 — The year of foundation
The festival was founded by local musicians and artists with the aim of discovering and preserving the most important sources of Transylvanian early music.
Joannes Kájoni's legacy
The spiritual foundation of the festival rests on the melodies and chants of the Kájoni Codex, the musical collection of the 17th-century Franciscan friar.
Early Music Summer Academy
Running in parallel with the concerts are masterclasses of the highest calibre, where leading Hungarian and international professors teach historically informed performance techniques.

Dates
The festival and the Summer Academy's masterclasses are traditionally held in July each year. The dates of the 2026 edition: 6–12 July.
